Back in the Day

Sugar Land’s start as a sugar plantation turned company town for Imperial Sugar makes for an interesting history that still plays a role in the community today. Book a reservation for the historic walking tours of Old Sugar Land led by the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation on the second Saturday of each month to explore the area’s old town charm and learn about the beginnings of your new hometown. History and science buffs will love the fact that the Sugar Land branch of the Houston Museum of Natural Science is home to the fifth largest collection of fossils in the United States and the kiddos will love the Dig Pit filled with casts of dinosaur fossils.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Bring the family to Constellation Field to root for the home team, the Sugar Land Skeeters, a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The younger ones will love cheering on the team with “Swatson,” their official mascot, as well as enjoying the playground, splash pad, and $1 carousel rides. Adults can enjoy the Bud Light Ice House featuring an outdoor grill menu and happy hour. Check the schedule for their special event games with fireworks, great giveaways, and concerts!

That’s Entertainment

Get tickets to the hottest shows from music to comedy acts at Sugar Land’s newest entertainment venue, the state-of-the-art Smart Financial Centre. The Sugar Land Town Square is a great gathering spot with a full calendar of events throughout the year. Head to the plaza for the Movies under the Moon series, practice the cha cha with free dance lessons during the Dancing Under the Stars nights, bring the little ones out for Toddler Music Sessions on Tuesdays, and enjoy a variety of musical performances, including the Superstar competition, Sugar Land’s own take on American Idol.

Retail Therapy

First Colony Mall is home to heavy-hitters like Lululemon, Athleta, Sephora, Williams-Sonoma, and Brooklyn import, Grimaldi’s Coal Brick-Oven Pizzeria for when you need to refuel. You can also catch the latest blockbuster at the AMC inside the mall. Fashionable boutiques are plentiful in Sugar Land Town Square from bridal couture to blingy accessories along with button down shirts and cigars. Browse the décor finds at locally owned Twenty-Two Fifty Interiors which has interior design services as well. Vino & Vinyl makes it easy to add a new record or two to your vinyl collection as you sip on a glass of cabernet.

Foodie Finds

Start your Saturdays with a trip to the Imperial Farmer’s Market, held rain or shine from 9 am to 1 pm. The market also hosts live music while you shop for local produce, meats and cheeses, baked goods, and artwork too. Local dining hot spots include Japaneiro’s for sushi, Like Oak Grill for chicken fried steak, and Pakistani cuisine at Mai Colachi BBQ and Grill. Sweet and savory is on the menu at Jupiter Pizza and Waffles Co. and Guru Burgers and Crepes. Houston foodie favorites are also represented like bellagreen, FatBao, craft beer emporium Flying Saucer, Fadi’s Mediterranean Grill, and Churrasco’s South American steakhouse. There’s even an Austin outpost of Torchy’s Taco’s!

PARKS AND RECREATION

Head to the trails at Sugar Land Memorial Park which runs along the Brazos River or fish in the lake stocked with bass and catfish. The Imperial Park Recreation Center offers a full gym with youth programs and sports leagues for adults. Free Fitness Fridays at the Sugar Land Town Square is great way to start your morning and add some variety to your workout routines with either a boot camp or Zumba class. Mark your calendar for the Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta held in October on Brooks Lake.
