Houston Cinema Arts Festival 2019

Calling all film buffs! The Houston Cinema Arts Festival starts next Thursday, November 14th and runs through Monday, November 18th. This major Houston cinematic event features 30 screenings and programs staged across 10 venues around the city. Events include premieres, award-winning independent films, documentaries, and multimedia performances, along with opportunities to hear the makers and creators discuss their works. Many of the events are free if you register in advance. Or, you can purchase a Festival Pass giving you access to all the screenings plus priority seating!

Opening Night: Waves (Nov. 14th, 7:30 pm, Museum of Fine Arts Houston)

Houston native and director Trey Edward Shults will be in attendance at the Houston premiere of his latest film, Waves. He will be joined by Houston rap legend Bun B for a panel discussion after the screening.  

When I Get Home (Nov. 16th, 7:30 & 9:30 pm, The Deluxe Theatre)

Solange Knowles explores her Houston roots in her performing art film, When I Get Home. This is a free showing of the director’s cut which includes new scenes. 

Ben DeSoto: For Art’s Sake (Nov. 17th, 7:00 pm, Rice Cinema)

A short documentary film about Houston photojournalist Ben DeSoto who chronicled the city, especially the punk and hip hop music scene, for 30 years. Ben DeSoto and the directors will have a post-screening panel session. 

Cry of the Third Eye: The Last Resort (Nov. 17th, 7:30 pm, Aurora Picture Show)

The final act of artist’s Lisa E. Harris’ trilogy tackling the issues of gentrification in the Third Ward. This is a live presentation where the semi-silent film is performed and narrated by Harris herself.
