Have you seen the latest installment of True North – the annual installation of outdoor sculptures displayed on the leafy esplanade of Heights Boulevard? Named for the compass bearing of the picturesque thoroughfare that’s almost two miles, this al fresco art exhibit has been a community-supported event for seven years. Texas artists are represented in this roster of eight artworks with some of the pieces for sale if you’re looking to add artistic curb appeal to your home.
Here are some highlights from the 2020 collection:
- El Gallo Monument (1800 block) – the late Bob “Daddy-O” Wade and Will Larson created this colorful tribute to roadside Americana (pictured above).
- Forces of Nature: Blue Skies, Slinkys, & Hurricanes (1200 block) – Leticia R. Bajuyo took inspiration from all three to create a whimsical piece in blue.
- Big Cabbage (900 block) – Bill Davenport also sculpted the red and white mushrooms for the Heights neighborhood garden on Studewood and 14th St.
- Dodecahedron (600 block) – Vincent Fink fashioned a 12-sided polyhedron from acrylic glass which looks ready for a launch into outer space.
Kathlyn’s Tip: Although there’s shade on the esplanade, don’t forget to sport sunscreen and bring something cool to drink on your sculpture stroll.
Enjoy!
