Galveston Mardi Gras would have kicked off this weekend with parades, concerts, and balls but not this year due to the pandemic. New Orleans canceled their citywide celebration too – which also canceled Mardi Gras during the Spanish Flu in 1919. But there’s plenty of ways to “revel in place” and enjoy your own DIY version of Carnival. Here are some ways to get the party started.
- Parades may be canceled but Galveston residents, inspired by their NOLA neighbors, have decorated their homes like fabulous floats to get in the spirit. Check out this map to do your own self-guided, socially distant tour.
- Slice into a king cake from one of our local bakeries like Red Dessert Dive in the Heights, French Gourmet Bakery in River Oaks, Michael’s Cookie Jar (multiple locations), and Moeller’s Bakery in Bellaire.
- Book a table at Brennan’s for their Fat Tuesday menu on February 16 or make your own meal with their “To-Geaux” offerings, including king cake!
- Crawfish is in season so pick up a few pounds to share with your pod from The Boot in Shady Acres, Bayou City Seafood in the Galleria area, or BB’s (multiple locations).
Laissez les bon temps rouler!
