This coming Sunday, January 22nd, marks the Lunar New Year, which ushers in the Year of the Rabbit. In the Chinese zodiac, the rabbit symbolizes longevity, positivity, wittiness, and calm, meaning 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope and prosperity. Welcome good health, happiness, and fortune for the new year at one of the many celebrations around Houston. Here are a few events I hope to make it to. Lee’s Golden Dragon will be performing traditional lion dances at H-Mart in Katy Asiatown at 11:30 am both Saturday (1/21) and Sunday (1/22). Visit the nearby restaurants and bakeries for special Lunar New Year treats. The Chinese Community Center of Houston hosts a Lunar New Year Festival from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday (1/21). This family-friendly event will have everything from lion dances and kung fu demonstrations to vendors selling homemade dumplings and Lunar New Year merchandise. Discovery Green will present an evening of events from 5 pm to 8 pm on Sunday (1/22), featuring an hour-long performance by Dance of Asian America alongside family activities and food trucks. Asian Night Market will be set up at Railway Heights on Saturday (1/21) from 12 pm to 10 pm and Sunday from 12 pm to 9 pm with live music, lion dances, and Asian street food vendors. Wishing you health and good fortune in the new year! Kathlyn |
